Tempered vs. Laminated: Which Glass Your Job Actually Needs

Most of the glass on your projects is one of two types. They look nearly identical once installed. They behave completely differently when something hits them — and that difference is what determines where each one belongs.Most GCs call their glazing sub when the tile is done.



Here’s the short version, without the glass-shop vocabulary.

Tempered glass

Tempered glass is heat-treated after it’s cut, which puts the surface under compression and makes it substantially stronger than the same thickness of ordinary annealed glass.


When it does break, it breaks all at once into small, relatively dull pieces rather than long shards. That’s the whole point — it’s designed to fail in the least dangerous way possible.


The catch: it can’t be cut, drilled, or notched after tempering. Every hole, hinge cutout, and edge detail has to be finalized before the glass goes into the oven. That’s why field measure timing matters so much, and why a “small adjustment” at install isn’t a small adjustment. It’s a new piece of glass.



Where you’ll see it: shower enclosures and doors, most interior glass, storefront lites, and anywhere code calls for safety glazing in a hazardous location.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is two or more lites bonded together with a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer instead of leaving the opening.


That retention is the reason it exists. If the glass is holding something back — a person, weather, a security line — you want the broken pieces to stay put.


It also cuts sound transmission noticeably and blocks most UV, which matters more on commercial jobs than residential.


The catch: it costs more, it’s heavier, and the edges need to be detailed correctly so the interlayer isn’t exposed to standing water over time.



Where you’ll see it: glass guards and railings, overhead and sloped glazing, security and sound applications, and hurricane or impact-rated assemblies.

The two can be combined

Laminated glass can be made from tempered lites — which is common for guards, where you want both the strength of tempering and the retention of lamination. If you see a spec calling for “laminated tempered,” that’s what it means.

Where each one lands on a typical job

Shower enclosures and doors: tempered. Frameless work is usually 3/8″ or 1/2″ depending on span, panel size, and hardware. Thickness is a structural decision, not an upgrade — a heavy door on thin glass flexes and the hardware suffers for it.


Glass railings and guards: this is where it gets specific. Guard applications carry their own code requirements, and in many cases laminated glass is required — particularly where the glass acts as the guard without a continuous top rail. Confirm the requirement for your jurisdiction and application before you spec it, because this one gets caught at inspection.


Aluminum storefront: tempered in the doors, sidelites, and anywhere else that meets the hazardous-location criteria. Insulated units for conditioned space, single glazed for interior partitions.



Interior partitions and office fronts: usually tempered, with laminated used where sound control is part of the ask.

The two questions worth asking on every job

Is this a hazardous location? Doors, glass adjacent to doors, glass near walking surfaces, tub and shower enclosures, and glass near stairs and landings all trigger safety glazing requirements. Your code official has the final word, but if the glass is somewhere a person could walk into it or fall against it, assume the answer is yes.



Does this glass have to hold something back? If the answer is yes — a guard, an overhead application, anything protecting people below — tempered alone usually isn’t the right call, and laminated should be part of the conversation.

Why it matters to your schedule, not just your spec

Both types are made to order. Neither one can be modified in the field. And laminated in a specific thickness or interlayer isn’t always sitting on a shelf.



Getting the glass type right during design costs you a phone call. Getting it wrong shows up as a reorder, and a reorder shows up on your critical path.

Framed shower doors are forgiving. The frame absorbs a lot of variation, and nobody notices. Frameless enclosures are the opposite. There’s no frame to hide behind, so every condition in that bathroom shows up in the finished product. When a frameless install goes badly, the glass is almost never the problem.
